Synopsis

When being alone feels safer.

He engineered a life where no one could surprise him again. She built a fortress to guarantee her independence. In the quiet streets of Cluj-Napoca, two people who built their entire lives around control are about to discover that safety and solitude aren't the same thing.

“The silence of the empty rooms behind me felt less like safety and a lot more like being buried alive.”

Mark · 34 · Software architect

After a devastating betrayal destroyed his past, Mark rebuilt his life with clean logic: a quiet penthouse, a demanding career, and his orange cat, Cheddar. Everything is optimized, predictable, and completely safe. So why does coming home to a perfectly controlled life feel so empty?

“I prefer the fortress," I said flatly. "It keeps the liars on the outside.”

Leah · 39 · Boutique founder

Fresh out of an eight-year marriage that eroded her autonomy, Leah is launching a niche beauty boutique entirely on her own terms. She has the vision, the drive, and zero room for compromises. What she did not count on was an investor who thinks his money entitles him to more than a business partnership.

Told in Mark and Leah’s first-person voices, this contemporary romance begins in Cluj-Napoca, where two wary people meet while trying to protect the lives they are building.

A glimpse from the pages

Two voices. Complicated things.

Mark

I watched her from the hallway for a minute before saying anything. She was standing at the kitchen island, aggressively stirring some kind of green powder into a glass of water. What is she doing?

“Is that some sort of green healthy shake?” I asked.

She stopped stirring. She looked me up and down, her eyes settling on my plain gray t-shirt. “You're definitely older than you look,” she said. “It's a matcha.”

Leah

I caught my reflection in the window behind her chair. My image was layered over the grey street traffic moving through the autumn drizzle. I spend a small fortune on clinical skincare routines and high-end serums. It works. People constantly tell me I look twenty-nine or thirty, and they mean it as a compliment.

I am thirty-nine. I am tired in a way that hyaluronic acid cannot fix. I just do not have the energy to go out and play the dating game again.

Mark

“Can I tell you what I think is holding you back?” Dr. Albu asked. “You reject yourself before anyone else has the chance. The overengineering comes after that.”

I gave a short laugh. “So I should go in assuming she likes me?”

“Go in curious about whether you like her,” she said. “You are not going there to convince her you are good enough. You are going to find out whether you are good for each other.”

Leah

“Is that Dolce Gabbana The One I smell on you?” I asked, keeping my eyes on the cutting board. “It's a date fragrance. Not really suitable for a cooking class.”

The guy leaned against his metal counter. “Who said I'm not here on a date? And you know, at least it beats the smell of onions you're so upset about. By the way, you're decimating them.”

I finally stopped chopping and looked at him. He was tall, wearing a plain dark shirt. It was the guy from Instagram.

“Date, huh?” I pointed the tip of the blade at the cutting board. “I'm still holding the knife as you can see.”
